Mayor Nancy Chaney Participates in National League of Cities Conference (USA)
Nov. 5, 2012 (Moscow, Idaho) — *Mayor Nancy Chaney, Moscow, Idaho was recently appointed as one of 15 members of the National League of Cities (NLC) Nominating Committee that will be responsible for recommending a slate of officers and board members to lead NLC in 2013. Next year's leaders will be elected during the Annual Business Meeting at the Congress of Cities and Exposition in Boston, Massachusetts, on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 1.
Also at the Conference, the NLC University Communities Council (UCC), chaired by Chaney, will showcase NLC's One Health Resolution 2012–17. Guest presenter *Peter Rabinowitz, MD, associate professor in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Program at Yale, and affiliate of the international One Health Initiative Advisory Board, will speak about inter-relationships among human, animal, and ecological health and implications for local government.
As noted in NLC’s One Health Resolution 2012–17, “The One Health Initiative is the collaborative objective of multiple disciplines, including the American Medical Association (AMA), U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), their international counterparts, and environmental organizations, working locally, nationally, and globally to disseminate information about human health, animal health, and environmental health. … Successful adoption and implementation of the One Health Initiative will be predicated on the leadership, communication skills, and cooperation of its advocates.”
Scott Fedale, chair of the City of Moscow Sustainable Environment Commission, states, “I applaud the National League of Cities for engaging in a discussion on the One Health Initiative project. This initiative promises to expand collaborations and communication across disciplines in all areas of health care for humans, animals and the environment, as well as expanding the base of scientific knowledge in the public health arena."

National League of Cities (USA) Adopts One Health Resolution
November 18, 2011 (USA)—The National League of Cities (NLC) http://nlc.org/ adopted an historic One Health Resolution at its annual business meeting in Phoenix, AZ (USA) on November 12, 2011, with approximately 700 voting members in attendance.
The resolution states that “the National League of Cities supports integrated decision-making in the context of the One Health Initiative, and calls on the federal government to adopt legislation and practices that address human health, animal health, and ecological health in an integrated fashion and support local efforts to advance sustainability goals.”
One Health was also integrated into another comprehensive resolution, amended and approved for renewal, “Calling on the federal government to address issues of sustainability and support local ‘green’ efforts.” That resolution states, in part, “that for the betterment of the current generation, and to ensure that we meet our responsibility to future generations, NLC recommends that the federal government take the following actions…In the area of public health: Recognize relationships among the environment, food systems, animal health and human health, and support the One Health Initiative to promote integration of those disciplines, policies, and practices.”
The NLC represents more than 19,000 cities, towns and villages across the nation, with voting representation by more than 1,600 dues-paying member cities of all sizes.

Title: Mayor Nancy Chaney Appointed to National League of Cities’ Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources Steering Committee
January 31, 2011 – Washington, DC – National League of Cities President James Mitchell, Jr., has announced the appointment of Nancy Chaney, Mayor for the City of Moscow, Idaho to the National League of Cities’ (NLC) 2011 Energy, Environment and Natural Resources (EENR) Policy and Advocacy Steering Committee. This Committee has the lead responsibility for developing NLC federal policy positions in the areas of energy, clean air, solid and hazardous waste, water quality and supply, national wetlands, and endangered species.
Mayor Chaney holds a master’s degree in Environmental Science from the University of Idaho. “My involvement with EENR is a natural extension of my involvement with programs and policies that link the environment, the economy, and education, and relationships among human, animal, and ecological health,” she said. Chaney cited the One Health Initiative as an example. “The concept integrates human medicine, veterinary medicine, and environmental science through an international coalition of experts,” she explained. “We have all of the pieces for that model here, with the Center for Global Animal Health at Washington State University, the WWAMI medical education programs at UI and WSU, Moscow’s Sustainable Environment Commission, and our strong regional focus on environmental sustainability. By bringing those elements together, the Palouse is an important resource to improve health, environmental, and economic circumstances here and around the world.”
As a member of the EENR Steering Committee and Chair of the NLC University Communities Council, Mayor Chaney will play a key role in shaping NLC’s policy positions, while advocating on behalf of America’s cities and towns on Capitol Hill, with the Administration, and at home.
The chair of this year’s Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources Committee is Matt Zone, council member, Cleveland, Ohio. Serving as this year’s vice chairs are Matt Appelbaum, council member, Boulder, Colorado, Christopher Jones, deputy mayor pro tem, San Marcos, Texas, and Michael Sesma, council member, Gaithersburg, Maryland.
